The Collection: Stitches of Joy
Inspiration: American African Quilt
The Story Behind the Saree:
This saree is inspired by the American African quilt.African-American quiltmaking emerged in a context of poverty where recycling cloth made good sense. Quilts were created from scraps of fabric, and in order to get the most out of these scraps, they were sometimes simply sewn together. These were Utility quilts, meant for everyday use. The patterns in African-American quilts reflect the bold designs and colours found in African textile traditions - evident in items such as clothing, tent cloths, and bed covers; such quilts are known as “stripe”, or “band”, quilts and are made in vibrant colours, often with asymmetrically arranged patterns. .
